Whether small or big, healthy or unhealthy, noticeable or not, we all have habits that we practice and use throughout our daily lives.
And these habits form a big part of our routines and our routines shape our lives. So ask yourself, How is my life going, do I like it or not?
If the answer is yes, then keep doing what you are doing and improve to be better. If the answer is no, then it needs a change, and that change has to happen with the kind of habits you have.
You might think that the habits are not significant, and are just small so they can be brushed off, but remember that the smallest things, add up to the biggest results.
That’s a rule both in life and in your habits. So, if you don’t like the habits you have, consider changing them or better still, add new ones which will have a big impact on your life.
This post is going to show you some small healthy habits, which will drastically improve your body, your mind, and your life, in the short and long run.
But before going further, make sure you have gotten your free habit tracker, and you read this post on how to create new and healthy habits in your life.
And as a plus, and to your reading list, grab this book by James Clear called Atomic Habits, it is a classic and a must-read if you are serious about changing your life and your habits.
I have read it and it is outstanding and I recommend you read it as well, take notes and practice what he says in the book diligently and you will see results in no time.
Now, let’s, go on to the small healthy habits which will change your life both in the short and long term.
A QUICK OVERVIEW OF SMALL HEALTHY HABITS TO START
1. MAKE YOUR BED WHEN YOU WAKE UP
This is a small one, but as you know, small things always add up to big results. To start your day fresh and on a good note,
Make your bed when you wake up. This shouldn’t take you more than 5 minutes, and you will feel accomplished,
Doing this simple task first in the morning. Instead of waking up and leaving your bed the way it is, only to retire at night to a scattered bed,
Lay your bed, and then start your day. This small healthy habit is so valuable and gives you a long sense and feeling of accomplishment.
2. STRETCH YOUR BODY A BIT WHEN YOU GET UP FROM YOUR BED
When you wake up, you feel stiff, drowsy, and sometimes even tired, so much so that you feel like going back to sleep again.
Instead, use it as a sign that you should get up and stretch a little bit. You don’t have to be able to do the splits to do this,
But giving your body a little stretch wakes you up from sleep, increases your flexibility and over the healthy body.
A few light stretches like:
- Reaching up high with your toes
- Falling forward and touching your toes (or your ankles if you aren’t quite there yet)
- Moving your torso side to side
- Doing some overhead stretches with your arms
- And anything that truly stretches out your body.
Make it light and easy so you can enjoy it. Form this healthy habit daily and your mornings will turn out for the better.
3. DRINK WATER
No matter how easy this is, or how obvious it is, it is quite shocking how people forget to drink enough water throughout the day.
Do you usually do this? Or you know someone who does.
Not just when you wake up (although you should have a glass of water when you wake up), but throughout the day.
Cut out the soda, coke, or carbonated drinks and replace them with water. Your body is made up of 75% water, so it is reasonable to keep yourself hydrated.
However, if you don’t like simple plain old water, add some fruit to it to improve the taste. Maybe some slices of lemon, cucumber, or mint leaves.
And you are like me and love to try out new recipes, even with water, then get this great book on various fruit-infused water recipes.
It’s great if you decide to do more to your water than simply using ice, cucumber, lemon, or mint leaves.
4. FORM THE HABIT OF ADDING SOME WORKOUT TO YOUR ROUTINES
Besides the stretching which I mentioned in number 2, working out should be a part of your routine.
Scratch that. Working out should be a big part of your life. Your body needs daily movement, no matter how small it might be.
I’m not saying you should bust out to the gym and do bench presses all day long, but a simple jump-rope routine can do the trick.
Maybe you like walking, why don’t you go for a hike, or a jog around your neighborhood, or go swimming. Whichever one suits you.
The key is to find which one you like and go for it (though you should always try new things).
Here are a few things you can do if you aren’t sure yet:
- Take a bike ride (work those leg muscles)
- Have a jump-rope session (if you are a beginner, be careful so you don’t whip yourself with the rope)
- Take 15 minute light jog
- Go hiking
- Join a Zumba class
- Yoga (it’s a loved one)
- Stretch for your splits or backbend (or simply do some more focused daily stretches)
- Go running
And so much more you can do. Pick one you like, and create good habits around that one.
5. LOOK AFTER YOUR POSTURE
Ever seen yourself slouching on a seat, or at your desk? Are you slouching right now? I get it. This can happen unconsciously, especially when you are tired or bored.
But look after your posture. You don’t want to feel pain in your lower back or spine due to bad posture,
And then slouch in your glory days. This is more of a wake-up call than a healthy habit, but still form the habit of being aware of your posture and correcting it early on.
Now, keep a good posture as you keep reading further.
6. CUT DOWN ON THE SWEETS AND FRIED FOODS
We all love some ice cream, cake, or chocolate once in a while, and maybe top it off with some fried chicken, pizza, or French fries right?
As much as this sounds so good and super sweet, IT CAN BE BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH.
Forming small habits like eating sweets, and fried food all the time will result in bigger issues in the long run.
You will be looking at a high risk of obesity high blood sugar, diabetes, and so on. There is nothing wrong with treating yourself to some desert once in a while,
But doing that often is not a healthy thing to do. Instead of seeing sweets as food, or stuffing your face with candy when you feel sad,
Opt-in for healthier alternatives. There are so many healthy alternatives to candy, which are also sweet and savory.
If you don’t know where to start, get a recipe book on healthy desserts. That should give you a head start.
You can also limit your sweets to only serve as a treat, and not food. The keyword there is ONCE IN A WHILE.
Don’t miss that at all.
7. ADD VEGGIES AND GREENS TO YOUR MEALS DAILY
Yes, I mean daily.
Your food plate should look something like this.
Now imagine that is your plate, what would you fill in each section. Maybe you decide to have pasta for dinner.
What will be the veggies and protein you add to it? Make sure you follow this simple rule when you are making your meals,
To get the most nutrients and in the right quantity for your body.
You can also add veggies such as spinach, to your smoothies. It’s a quick way to get the benefits of veggies every day and in every way.
There are so many ways to add veggies to your meal, you just have to pick which one is best for you, and plate it according to the rule.
8. KEEP A JOURNAL
How do you practice gratitude, unleash your creativity, and write down all the crazy ideas that pop into your head?
KEEPING A JOURNAL. This is by far one of the most important habits you can form in your life. Journals are amazing,
And they are a good way of keeping track of your feeling, emotions, finances, creative works, and more.
You don’t have to use a journal for gratitude alone (although that is an amazing thing to do with a journal),
You can keep and use a journal for a variety of things. Things like:
- Keeping track of your food intake and calorie counting
- Keeping track of your habits (make sure you get the habit tracker for free)
- Emotional journaling for emotions
- Bucket lists
- Crazy ideas you have and so much more.
There are lots of things you can do with a journal, so don’t limit yourself.
Having, keeping, and using a journal is a small step to developing lifelong healthy habits that will be beneficial to you. And if this journaling space is new to you,
You should get yourself a little bit educated by using this guide on how to start journaling for beginners.
One of the best journaling guides out there that you can lay your hands on for sure, so make sure you use it to your advantage.
9. READ DAILY
One of the best things you can do for yourself, especially early on, is reading. Read as much as you can and assimilate so much information.
Reading is one of the many ways to invest in yourself, doing this daily will help you see new things,
Broaden your horizon and teach you so much about the world that you never knew and realized.
Don’t know which one to read? Well, I’ve got you covered, as have so many books on this site, and you just have to pick one that suits you,
Or if you are not a fan of reading, then get yourself some audiobooks. Listen to them as you go grocery shopping, working out, or when you are driving.
It’s never too late to assimilate more knowledge and educate yourself on the things the world has to offer.
So, grab a cup of tea, your headphones for the audiobook, or grab the physical copy of the book and improve your life.
10. WEAR SOME SPF (SUNSCREEN) DAILY
There is nothing worse than going out into the sun, with your bare skin, and not being protected from the harsh rays of the sun.
Everyone, including your needs to wear sunscreen. It doesn’t matter whether the sun is shining bright or the cloudy are gathering,
Your skin needs to be protected daily and you need sunscreen for that.
I’m not talking about getting some flakey sunscreen that’s harsh on the skin and leaves off white residues,
You need a lightweight, easy to use and apply sunscreen, and I have just the thing for you.
I use Neutrogena sunscreen. I understand that it might cost more than you want for a simple sunscreen, but that simple investment in your skin goes a long way.
The Neutrogena sunscreen is lightweight, easy on the skin and easy to apply, and doesn’t leave any white residue,
That makes you wonder why your skin has white patches. You need to protect your skin, and getting high-quality sunscreen for your skin should be a plus 1 for you.
This is a step to creating small habits that improve your healthy lifestyle in the long run.
11. INCORPORATE THE HABITS OF YOGA AND DEEP BREATHING
Your mind wavers from time to time and you feel you have no control over it right? Well, it’s time to take back control,
And you can do that with some deep breathing exercises and yoga. Don’t worry if this is still new to you,
And you don’t know how to do it. It’s quite simple, and all you have to do is start small. A simple 5-minute session of sitting still and focusing on your breathing and your mind will be incredibly beneficial to you.
If you are a beginner, I urge you to get this simple beginner’s yoga guide and sequence to get you started.
Practicing the habit of yoga is good for your mind, body, and soul and you will be grateful to yourself for yoga.
12. UNPLUG FROM THE WORLD AND GIVE YOURSELF SOME LOVE
You need this, I need this, and we all need this.
Your self-care should be a priority for you, no matter where you are, who you are, or how your environment is.
Show yourself some love.
- Keep your phone away and unplug from social media
- Give yourself a soak in your tub and relax
- Grab a book, whatever genre it is, and indulge
- Give your body some love through a massage. You don’t need to go to the spa, but simply purchasing a full body massage kit will give you the same effect.
- Cook yourself a meal you have never cooked before. (unleash your culinary creativity)
- Play dress up. Try one of those clothes you bought but never had the chance to wear.
And so much more. You need to form the habit of showing yourself some love, because if you don’t love yourself,
No one will and no one will love you as much as you love yourself. Don’t depend on the artificial likes of social media and live life to the fullest.
Take care of yourself in the small way possible and even in the biggest of ways. The time you spend with yourself is worth it,
So show yourself some love.
And that wraps it up for the small healthy habits you should be practicing to change your life for the better.
